GENERAL DESCRIPTION The last municipality at the north of Versilia. Is the most recent municipality of Versilia. Not very much extended upon the sea from Marina di Pietrasanta to Cinquale. At the north-east border with the municipalities of Seravezza and Pietrasanta. The town extends itself in the whole territory without interruption, even if the buildings are immerged on the green. From Lucca it's 33km away, 10km from Massa, 6km from Pietrasanta, 7 from Seravezza and 11 from Viareggio. At the extreme North east border with National road Aurelia and it is crossed by the A12 highway where there is the Versilia exit. Connected with Pietrasanta , Seravezza, Viareggio and Lucca by bus lines. The railway station is in Querceta. The hystoric centre, quite small, it develops in a square with at the centre the eighteenth-century's small fortress. It has a pier that it extends on the sea for about 100 meters, now made in cement but once made in wood, that was used for the boats dock that transport the marble of the Apuane. Today is used for the dock of boats that make sightseeing for the tourists on the La Spezia gulf and on the islands of the Tuscan archipelago. The number of inhabitants of the whole municipality doesn't reach 10.000 people. The main characteristic of the centre is based on the commerce and on the tourist settlements. The origin of the name is due to the fortress built by Leopold I of Tuscany on 1788 from the pier to carry the marble.
